Another day in the saddle with Sarge and the friends and family of Christopher Hitchcock

4th Annual Christopher Hitchcock Memorial Run

Some people go on rides to drink, others go on rides to eat and still others go on rides to, well, ride.  No matter what category you fall into, the Christopher Hitchcock Memorial run has your needs covered.  The ride is actually split into two rides, a dry ride led by Sarge and a wet ride led by someone else.  Both rides depart J & J’s Fox Laire Tavern in Bakers Mills, NY and return there for the after ride festivities.  I am surprised that more people do not show up for this ride since no matter what your preferences are; there is a ride segment that should meet your requirements.  As I mentioned earlier, the run is hosted at J & J’s Fox Laire Tavern in Bakes Mills, NY and Ricci and Joe are always the consummate hosts and it is always nice to have the chance to meet them again.  Comstock’s Pig Roast always handles the food chores.  The pig is always cooked to perfection and there are always plenty of salads and side dishes to go around.  If you leave this event hungry then it is surely your own fault.

I usually ride with Sarge on the Dry Run but this year I decided to take the wet run.  The ride departed J & J’s Fox Laire Tavern and took Route 8 East through Johnsburg, NY and then to Wevertown, NY.  At Wevertown the ride proceeded south on Route 28 to Route 9 and then south on Route 9 through Warrensburg, NY and Lake George, NY and onto Route 9N heading to the Waterhouse Inn located  in Lake Luzerne, NY.

After a brief stop at the Waterhouse Inn the ride proceeded up the East side of the Great Sacandaga Lake to the Old Trail Inn in Edinburg, NY where we stopped for some food and refreshments.  I love this ride up County Route 4 / North Shore Road.  It weaves its’ way around the jagged edges of the lake and is full of sweeping turns that just lures you into leaning into them and letting the bike roll through the corner.

We departed the Old Trail Inn and headed to Northville, NY and our third stop of the day which was Vick’s.  After a brief stop at Vicks we headed towards Route 30 and managed to somehow survive the moron in the GMC Sierra that was sure he was too good to stop for the blockers.  He actually looked surprised when he found himself cutting through the middle of the ride.

After playing dodge ball with the idiot we proceeded up Route 30 and intersected Route 8.  A quick sprint across Route 8 and we were back at J & J’s Fox Laire Tavern.  The pig was done and while final preparations were made to server dinner, the 50/50 raffle was drawn as were the winners of the silent auction.  The hot item of the day was a bear carving but running a very close second were a pair of handmade quilts with a Harley Davidson motif.

After dinner and the raffles and drawings there are field events.  I usually stay for these but this year I had other things that required my attention so I packed up, said goodbye to Sarge and the staff and headed towards home having spent yet another day on the bike with friends and looking forward to next year’s run.
