Chris "Hammer" DeTroye Memorial Run
Last year on May 15, 2010 the motorcycle community lost Chris “Hammer” DeTroye. In August last year we celebrated Chris’s life with Leah’s ride. This year, the Chris “Hammer” DeTroye Memorial Run was conducted on May 15, 2011.
I really hate riding in the rain so I jumped into the cage and drove on over to The Long Horn at Lake Vanare to see if the ride was still on. In the past I have ridden to rides in the rain only to find out upon arrival that the ride was cancelled. Not so this time though. When I arrived at The Long Horn there were already bikes in the parking lot and Jeremy made it clear that the ride was on rain or shine.
The ride route was relatively simple. Take 9N to Route 9, Route 149 to Route 4 and then north on Route 4 to Finnius T. Flubberbusters. I decided to go home, grab the scoot and meet the ride at the intersection of 9 and 149. I told Jeremy that if I was not at the intersection to not wait for me and I would catch up.
After donning my rain gear I headed out into the pouring rain and proceeded to Finnius T. Flubberbusters. The ride out was wet, long and uneventful but I finally arrived and hooked up with the ride. We hung out for an extended period of time at Finnius T’s, not so much because it was still raining but because Finnius T’s is just a really cool place to hang. Dave (the owner of Finnius T’s) had warm food out and everyone grabbed something to eat and something to drink and then proceeded to kill some time with old friends.
After a few hours, the ride mounted up and once again we headed out in the rain on the return leg to The Long Horn. I broke from the ride at the junction of Route 9 and 9N and I headed north to home and some dry clothes. After a quick change of clothes I hoped back into the cage and headed over to The Long Horn to catch some dinner. The food and the service at The Long Horn are always great and this buffet was no exception. Each time I stop at The Long Horn the service and the food seem to get better and better.
The ride was wet and chilly but the opportunity to meet with old friends, share an adventure, swap some tales and share some great food made the lousy weather inconsequential.
