Ashes Pub and Grill
Where Good Friends Gather
I grew up in the Town of Warrensburg. One icon within the town that I always remember was Ashes Hotel on Hudson Street. During my formative (read young and stupid) years it was my favorite watering hole. This storied landmark in my home town has a rich and vibrant history.
In 1888 Henry Ashe built the original hotel and operated it under the name of the Agricultural Hotel. In the 1930’s, Morris Ashe, Henry’s son acquired the hotel and renamed it to Ashes Hotel and he operated it under that name until his death in 1974. Up until the 1960’s, the hotel was operated as a summer resort destination and subsequent to that as a tavern and restaurant.
Between 1975 and 1987 there were various owners and in 1987, John & Janice Albale obtained the property and have operated it as Ashes Hotel until the present day. It is interesting to note that the tavern portion of the hotel has been in continuous operation since it first opened in 1888.
John & Janice have put a large amount of effort into revitalizing the hotel. The tavern, restaurant and dining area have all been upgraded. A new chef has been hired and the menu expanded. It was nice to learn that as the facilities were upgraded, their historical significance was kept in mind so as to not change the character of the century old landmark.
The inside was not the only thing to be changed. There is an outside bar and outside kitchen adjacent to the covered patio. A few yards away is a large event tent with a stage and plenty of space for seating or just hanging out. These allow Ashes’ to host events outside as well as inside and there is ample free parking available as well.
Most Friday nights there is live music and on Saturday nights there is a DJ and karaoke. During Americade week Ashes’ hosts a number of parties and events. See the article “Beyond Americade” for a complete schedule and details.
If you are planning a run you might want to consider using the Ashes Hotel as the start point, the end point or a way point. You will find that the beer is cold, the service is fast and friendly and the facilities are more than capable of insuring your ride guests have a good time.
