Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America

We all have that list.  Not your ‘Honey Do’ list but that list of items that you would someday like to do if the means or the opportunity presented itself.  One item that has always been high on my list is the ‘Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America’.  Each year I try to follow the ride on-line and then wait for the special to be run on TV.

This is an adventurous trip for a worthwhile cause and each year the ride route is different.  This year I was on Jayski.com and noticed that the 2011 ride had been announced.  I went to www.KylePettyCharityRide.com and discovered that the 2011 ride is departing Lake Placid, NY on May 7, 2011 and terminating at Amelia Island, FL on May 13, 2011.  The first overnight stop is in Corning, NY.  We will publish the ride route from Lake Placid to Corning including fuel stops as soon as it is provided to us by the ride organizers.  All are encouraged to cheer the riders on as they pass through your locale.

The primary recipient of the funds is the Victory Junction Camp located in Randleman, North Carolina.  The Victory Junction Camp is a member of and accredited by the Association of Hole In the Wall Camps.  That makes the Victory Junction Camp a sister camp to our own Double H Camp located in Lake Luzerne, NY.  The mission of Victory Junction is the same as the Double H Camp.  To provide a Camp environment for children with chronic and life threatening medical conditions where they can receive the daily care that they need and yet still enjoy a summer camp experience.

A few years ago, the ride started in Vermont and proceeded down route 9N and entered the Adirondack Northway at exit 22.  I went down to the rest area at exit 22 and was surprised at the number of people that turned out just to watch the ride go by.   With the ride scheduled to depart Lake Placid I decided to take a long shot and ask the organizers of the ride for press credentials for Karen and I.  Much to my surprise and delight we received a positive confirmation in a very short period of time.  We will be covering the rides’ departure from Lake Placid on Saturday May 7th and will publish an article on that event in the June issue.

Now here is the really cool part.  The departure activities are open to the public and the ride organizers are encouraging everyone to come to Lake Placid on May 7th and help kick off this ride.  There will be NASCAR stars and other celebrities in attendance and I am not sure but I am guessing that there will be some form of film/TV crew there to cover the departure.

This would make a great club ride and event and I would encourage each of our subscribers to get as many friends together as possible and attend this rides’ kick-off.  Lets’ show this rides’ organizers that they made the right choice for a departure point by showing up in force and helping them celebrate the departure of another Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America.

The departure activities will be between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM at:

The High Peaks Resort
2384 Saranac Avenue
Lake Placid, NY 12946
(518) 523-4411
